There is no room for your overheads when working in a large recording studio – something that you won’t find at many other schools in England.

Another option available to students at one of the many music recording colleges is University of Manchester – specifically the Masters in Music. This top-tier university operates two recording campuses in the UK, and students can complete an extensive course of study at one of these locations. The coursework takes several years to complete, and focuses on the art and science of music – focusing in particular on audio recording. This is a highly regarded institution, and many of the world’s leading music industry executives work out there.

The last major music school in the area is King’s College, near Manchester University. King’s College is the only university that offers a full degree within the music industry. The coursework takes a minimum of three years to complete and will allow students to gain a recognised qualification as well as gain experience for working within a music recording department. The majority of the students who enrol at King’s College come from arts backgrounds, with the other students being from engineering, media, advertising and management backgrounds. King’s is a reputable and respected establishment in the music industry – and many top artists and musicians have had their beginnings worked into recordings that were done at this college. Although not as prestigious as its larger cousins, it is still a quality recording school and it is definitely worth considering if you want to make a career in audio recording – even if this means taking your education elsewhere.
